In only its second vintage this small French-owned estate located near Camigliano has produced an outstanding 2001 Brunello. Cupano pursues biodynamic farming in its vineyards which are among the most densely planted in the region. The Brunello, which is made from minuscule yields, does malo in barrique where it also ages on its lees prior to being bottled. Unfortunately there are only 2,000 bottles of this wine and it is already priced in the stratosphere. Cupano’s 2001 Brunello di Montalcino is made in an unabashedly international style. It is a powerful, deeply-colored Brunello bursting with heady layers of sweet toasted oak, super-ripe cherries, tobacco, scorched earth and spices that flow onto the palate with notable concentration and length conveying a sense of fine overall balance. Although it does not appear to be built for the very long haul, both bottles I have had so far have been outstanding and this is a great effort from an up-and-coming estate. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018.
