This wine is part of Michele Castellani's Collezione Ca' del Pipa. The 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Cinque Stelle is open-knit and slightly oxidative in personality, with a dark garnet color and lots of dried fruit and prune-like aromas. The wine is full-bodied and determined (with 15.5% alcohol), and those features are pushed forward over the palate thanks to extra aromas of spice and dried tobacco, which are the result of some three years in barrique. The traditional blend used here is 70% Corvina and Corvinone, 25% Rondinella and 5% Molinara. About 30,000 bottles were made.

A fresh and elegant Amarone, trimmed by sleek, integrated tannins and displaying a lovely range of crushed black cherry and ripe damson plum fruit with accents of red licorice, tea leaf and ground white pepper. Though medium- to full-bodied and focused, this wears its weight well, harmonious through to the lingering, minerally finish of iron and smoke.
