The 2001 Unnum (a designation Merino uses only in the finest vintages) is 100% Tempranillo which received malolactic fermentation in barrel followed by 24 months in new French and American oak. Also medium ruby-colored, this effort has more focused aromatics featuring darker fruits as well as earth, cedar, cinnamon, and vanilla. There is excellent depth as well as complexity to this supple-textured wine’s personality. Everything is nicely balanced with enough structure for several years of further evolution in bottle. It should continue to drink well through 2020.
