Amity has a policy of releasing his Pinot Noirs after they have had sufficient bottle age. Sometimes this works, while other times the fruit is muted and faded by the time the wines arrive on the market. The recently released 1988 Pinot Noir-Winemaker's Reserve represents Amity's finest cuvee of Pinot Noir. This offering often has enormous potential, but I sometimes wonder if it is not released too late, after some of its exuberance has begun to fade. The excellent 1988 boasts a deep garnet color, a big, smoky, gamey, Pinot nose with aromas of leafy fruit and earth. Dense, spicy, and rich, with medium to full body and firm, ripe tannins in the finish, this Pinot Noir should continue to drink well for 5-7 years. It has a resemblance to a rustic wine from Burgundy's Cote de Nuits.
