This is a delicious wine that many readers will find even better than my rating suggests. Although not complex, it is loaded with fun and fruit, extremely pure (because of clean, healthy vinifications), and well-balanced, with fruit-dominated personalities. I highly recommend it even though my scoring system does not do justice to wine such as this that represents 100% pleasure, yet may not be that complex.
The 1998 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo exhibits an explosive character and a deep ruby color. It is a totally disarming/charming wine of elegance, ripeness, wonderful fruit purity, a supple, velvety texture, and medium body. There is no evidence of oak in this fruit-dominated offering. Drink it over the next 1-2 years.
