The 2018 Pinot Noir Estate, aged in 60% new Fran?ois Frères barrels, has a medium ruby color and aromas of cured meats, red and black cherries, graphite, dried earth and tobacco leaves. The medium-bodied, satiny palate explodes with concentrated earth- and spice-laced fruits, gently grainy, super fresh and finishing very long and uplifted. 861 cases produced.

The 2017 Pinot Noir Estate, aged in 60% new Fran?ois Frères barrels, is pale to medium ruby-purple and offers pretty aromas of spiced cranberry sauce, clove, dried orange peel and black tea leaves with shaved nutmeg, raspberry and strawberry preserves, blackberries and dried flowers. Medium-bodied and very silky with loads of ripe, spicy fruits, it has juicy acidity and soft, grainy tannins, finishing long and very spicy. Give this another couple years in bottle. 644 cases produced.

Pale ruby-purple colored, the 2016 Pinot Noir Estate has amazingly pure notions of crushed cranberries, Bing cherries and redcurrants with touches of garrigue, tilled soil and bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, it delivers bags of crunchy red berry flavors and a lovely satiny texture with a very long, lively finish. 896 cases produced.

The 2015 Pinot Noir Estate has an extra gear to it because of the tiny yields. It exhibits loads of rich black raspberry and blackcurrant fruit, a lush, sweet, spicy mouthfeel with full body, intense concentration and a long finish that has energy from the vibrant acidity. Drink it over the next decade or more. Dark ruby/purple, the 2015 Pinot Noir Cahill Lane offers plenty of spring flower garden notes intermixed with blueberry and blackcurrant fruit. It is rich, textured, builds incrementally on the palate and finishes after a good 35-40+ seconds. This is a beauty and should drink well up to a decade or more. The 2015 Pinot Noirs are still in barrel, hence these notes are all barrel samples. This was the earliest harvest for Stephen Hansel in more than a generation and the yields were frightfully low, averaging 40% off their average production that is never that high to begin with. All of these Pinot Noirs enjoy a 5-6 day cold soak and tend to see 50%-60% new oak and the rest one-year-old oak. They are set to be bottled unfined and unfiltered in November 2016.

The 2014 Pinot Noir Estate is another realistically priced wine from Stephen Hansel and is a super value with its sweet cherry and raspberry fruit, allspice, subtle background oak and a medium to full body. It is a beautiful wine made mostly from Rochioli cuttings and a small amount of the Joseph Swan clone. Like most of these Pinot Noirs, it sees about 60% new French oak and the rest used barrels. All of these Pinot Noirs are bottled unfined and unfiltered just like the Chardonnays.
