The 2009 BRANCO is a blend of Malvasia Fina, Gewurztraminer and Riesling, a rather unusual Northern Portuguese white blend, to say the least. Not surprisingly, it has intense aromatics. As I lifted the glass preparing to smell the wine, I already had a substantial and expressive whiff from a foot away. With a little bit of spice and a little bit of mint and a little bit of this and that, this is certainly different. It has reasonably good acidity and seems sunny, with decent depth. Whether you like the medley of flavors or not will be up to you, but I thought this was a lot of fun and quite charming. Drink it on the young side. Drink now-2012. The winemaker at this old (1913) Northern Portuguese property is Rui Cunha. Although the wines are in the general vicinity of the Douro appellation, this property is located North of the Douro and they are not Douro DOC wines. Apart from location, most of the wines are vinho regional wines as they contain international grapes, like Cabernet Sauvignon.Importer: Ingenium Wines, Huntsville, AL; tel: (256) 684-2543.
