This is clearly a superlative source for terrific red wines at bargain prices. The 1988 Carignane is reminiscent of both an Italian Amarone and a California late-harvest Zinfandel. While it is not a sweet wine, this hefty, robust effort is oozing with peppery, spicy, chunky fruit, with gobs of body, and a lusty, nearly thick finish. If served with full-flavored cuisine, or with powerful cheeses, this personality-filled wine will make a favorable impression. It should easily drink well for another decade. It should be apparent that this winery is making a bevy of terrific red wines at bargain basement prices. Their wines all sell for between $6-$12 a bottle. Given their quality/price rapport, these wines will not linger on retailers' shelves.
