The 2009 Terra Negra is a blend of 80% Carinena, 10% Garnacha and 10% Syrah from 10- to 40-year-old vines surrounded by olive trees. It isaged in both new and old French oak. It has a rather smudged bouquet with mulberry, some torrefactory aromas and a touch of dusty granite. The palate is medium-bodied, exhibiting a rounded, confit-like entry of blackberry, dark plum and sloes with a touch of marmalade. It is a muscular Montsant red, a little coarse compared to its peers, but it demonstrates good weight, if not finesse, on the white pepper-dashed finish. Drink now-2016.
