The Tenuta la Fuga 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva le Due Sorelle (with only 4,000 bottles released) is dark in color and constitution. It shows dried fruit aromas of blackcurrant and sun-dried fig, and it also reveals lots of roasted spice and oak at the back. I need to point out the 15% alcohol content, which proves distracting, especially with a grape as fine and elegant as Sangiovese. The finish is slightly sweet in this vintage, and the tannins are accessible.

The Tenuta la Fuga 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva le Due Sorelle lives up to its top-shelf designation with extra density and concentration, all backed by lush aromas of black fruit, spice and sweet tobacco. This mid-weight wine starts off with a big aromatic profile, but ultimately it ends a bit short on the finish. This wine could use an extra year or two to flesh out. 4,000 bottles were released.

Tenuta la Fuga makes consistent wines that generally can be enjoyed in the near term without too much bother. You can age them, but they also show the softness and richness for immediate enjoyment. The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva le Due Sorelle illustrates this point very nicely. Dark spice, cured meat and grilled herb add savory notes to the bouquet. These are amplified by plum, prune and black currant. The mouthfeel shows medium length, but it is also succulent and soft. There is a thin layer of tannic firmness that opens this Brunello to pair with grilled meats or steak.

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva le Due Sorelle shows power, balance and intensity. The wine is also generous and open at this young stage in its life. You can definitely drink it within the next five years or longer if you so choose. Dark berry notes of blackberry and black currant segue to lighter tones of cola and licorice. The wine is streamlined, tight and long in persistence.

The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva le Due Sorelle is a full-bodied wine by Brunello standards. It opens to inky rich consistency and a blackish garnet color with little light penetration. That same caliber of intensity continues to the nose with compelling aromas of dark berry, licorice, tar and dried tobacco leaf. The wine ages in large Slavonian oak casks for up to five years for a long and careful evolution. You taste the fruits of that process here thanks to the overall sophistication and quality of the bouquet. The ripeness of the fruit is also well monitored: It does't feel jammy or too thin.
