Big power and lots of dark concentrated fruit introduce the 2015 Montefalco Sagrantino from Tenuta Alzatura, of which 15,000 bottles were made. It brings ample cherry intensity and notes of blackberry, spicy oak and sweet tar. This is a full-bodied Sagrantino with lots of hot-vintage sunshine. You'll note the tannins and 15% alcohol. Pair it with a fatty steak and sour-cream-topped baked potatoes.

A fresh Sagrantino in a harmonious style, though still firm and focused. Grippy tannins and a spine of graphite-edged mineral are layered with baked black cherry and cassis, cured tobacco and licorice. Woodsy spice and smoke notes play on the finish. The Tenuta Alzatura 2012 Montefalco Sagrantino is a deep and dark red wine with robust, full-bodied appeal. The bouquet opens to black fruit, prune, tar, smoke and Indian spice. In fact, there is an almost exotic quality to this wine, with cardamom and cumin buried in there somewhere at the back. This wine sees a long 16 months in French barrique. Some 6,000 bottles were released.

Tenuta Alzatura's 2010 Montefalco Sagrantino is a massive and thickly layered wine that boasts a very firm and determined personality. The wine does not shy back and in fact boasts a forceful opening with cherry liqueur, Indian spice and dark barbecue smoke (thanks to 16 months in oak). Those aromas rush from the glass and the bouquet continues to peel back in thick layers. Wet earth and tobacco appear on the close.
