The 2007 Tato is impressive. This Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend reveals tons of intensity and energy. Firm yet well-intergrated tannins support a core of dark red fruit, licorice, new leather and crushed flowers. In 2007 the Tato is round, sweet and inviting from the very first taste. This is a terrific showing from Sant’Elena. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. Sant’Elena is an interesting property. The estate is located in Gradisca, a town that historically has not been known for the quality of its vineyards. Still, in recent years, Sant’Elena has produced a number of terrific wines under the leadership of proprietor Dominic Nocerino, best known as the owner of Vinifera Imports. There are still some kinks that need to be worked out, and not all of the wines I tasted merited inclusion for this report, but the best wines are well worth seeking out. The 2006 Tato is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot. It shows plenty of black cherry, plum and grilled herb character, but doesn’t quite reach the level of the estate’s finest reds. The tannins could use a touch more polish as well. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020. These are the most impressive wines across the board I have tasted from Sant’Elena. The 1997 Tato (usually a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 60% Merlot, aged in French oak for two years) exhibits a dark ruby/purple color in addition to an attractive, Bordeaux-like nose of cedar wood, spice box, black currants, and wood. It also possesses medium body, ripe, concentrated flavors, low acidity, and a fine finish. It can be drunk now as well as over the next decade.
