The Grande Vineyard was planted by the Rossi family in 1920, just off the Silverado Trail. The 2008 Zinfandel Grande Vineyard has a deep, complex nose of forest floor, loamy soil notes, pepper, blueberry, black raspberry and currants, all in a wine that is more Cabernet-like than a Zinfandel. Impressively saturated ruby/purple, full-bodied and rich, this may well be the most impressive wine in the entire portfolio, and that’s saying something. It is a gorgeous wine to drink over the next 5-6 years.
There is always a remarkable array of wines from Biale Vineyards. This family has been farming Zinfandel in Napa since 1937, and the wines consistently are among the highlights in my Zinfandel tastings. All of these wine generally have production levels of 200 to 500 cases, with the exception of the Valsecchi, which is only 47 cases, and the Black Chicken, which is nearly 2,600 cases.
