From a vineyard planted in 1920, the 2014 Zinfandel Grande Vineyard is another big, rich (15.4% alcohol), flashy and flamboyant style of Zinfandel with a dense ruby/purple color, an opulent, voluptuous texture, full-bodied mouthfeel, and a long, pure, rich finish. Like all of these wines, the fruits are black and blue, and the wine well-buttressed by decent acidity and exceptional purity, while the oak is pushed well to the background. This is a blockbuster Zin to drink over the next 7-8 years.

The 2009 Zinfandel Grande Vineyard is another striking wine. It is less obvious than some of the other Zinfandels in the lineup. The Grande Vineyard is deceptively medium in body, but there is plenty of fruit and just as much character in the glass. Mint, tobacco and dried flowers add shades of nuance to the dark red fruit on the refined finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017. This lineup from Biale is full of fabulous wines. The Grande Vineyard was planted by the Rossi family in 1920, just off the Silverado Trail. The 2008 Zinfandel Grande Vineyard has a deep, complex nose of forest floor, loamy soil notes, pepper, blueberry, black raspberry and currants, all in a wine that is more Cabernet-like than a Zinfandel. Impressively saturated ruby/purple, full-bodied and rich, this may well be the most impressive wine in the entire portfolio, and that’s saying something. It is a gorgeous wine to drink over the next 5-6 years. There is always a remarkable array of wines from Biale Vineyards. This family has been farming Zinfandel in Napa since 1937, and the wines consistently are among the highlights in my Zinfandel tastings. All of these wine generally have production levels of 200 to 500 cases, with the exception of the Valsecchi, which is only 47 cases, and the Black Chicken, which is nearly 2,600 cases. Tel. A sensational offering, the 2007 Zinfandel Grande Vineyard is less evolved than some of its siblings, but it possesses more punch, power, concentration, and layers of texture. A dense ruby/purple hue is followed by lots of blueberry, black raspberry, and black cherry fruit, as well as sensational texture, purity, and depth. It should hit its peak in another year or two, and evolve for at least a decade. This is a beautiful portfolio of wines from Robert Biale Vineyards.
