The 2008 Tinto “Coroa d’Ouro” is a typical Douro blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca. Another fine value offering from this winery, this is something that really grew on me. As it opened velvety and charming, with a touch of roasted meat, it impressed for its balance and seductive texture. As it aired out, it showed steel, an earthiness, and it came together beautifully with all the parts integrating. The wine seems pure and fresh. This graceful wine is a nice buy for early consumption. Drink now-2017. This winery has some nice offerings this issue at all levels, but it is hard to avoid calling special attention to the value wines – they performed very well at quite nice price points.Importer: HGC Imports, San Jose, CA.; tel. The 2007 TINTO “COROA D’OURO” is a typical Douro blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca. Modest in mid-palate concentration, this is nonetheless quite charming, silky and elegant, with grip and intensity on the finish. It does have some of that roasted rhubarb/wild herb nuance I have been getting on some Douro wines lately. It evolved beautifully in the glass. If you like its flavor profile, it offers considerable bang for the buck, another fine value ’07 Tinto and another fine value from this winery. The 2005 TINTO COROA D-OURO is a typical Douro blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca. It is nicely constructed, with some intensity on the finish and a solid feel to the mid-palate. Flavorful, with some complexity and a bright, sunny demeanor, this is a nice value this year and a step up on the 2004. Tannins appear with aeration, giving this wine some unexpected power, an obvious backbone and the ability to age gracefully for several years. It hangs very well with the pricier wines reviewed this issue from Pocas, the one caveat being that extended aeration proved that this is not likely to improve as much with age as, say, the -05 Reserva. In its price range, this is pretty respectable, and a very good value. For earlier drinking, you may even prefer it to the Reserva. There were 20,000 cases produced. Drink 2009-2015. This winery, a relatively new entrant to table wine production in the Douro, is making a splash and providing some good values along the way.Importers: HGC Imports, San Jose, CA.; tel.
