Looking at the huge, heavy bottle of the 2009 Opus 11 makes you think of one of those over-concentrated and overpriced monsters. The aromas are mostly oak-related, cigar ash, chocolate, espresso coffee, roasted oak and vanilla, with very ripe black fruit in the background. It is full-bodied, with plenty of stuffing and alcohol. This is powerful and concentrated, with a telluric, smoky, earthy nose and notes of peat, in an XXL fashion. Mind the price. Drink 2014-2018.
Pago de Cirsus was created in 1997 by Inaki Nunez in Ablitas, a small village in the south of Navarra. The winery is surrounded by 135 hectares of vineyards, but Nunez sold the winery in 2014 to an investor from Venezuela – Alejandro Gomez Sigala. There is a wide range of well-crafted, modern wines produced here, with the signature of French winemaker Jean Marc Sauboua.
