A good value for a polished red such as this, the Nino Negri 2016 Valtellina Superiore Grumello Sassorosso draws its fruit from terraced vineyards at 450 meters above sea level, some of the highest in the appellation. Production is 15,000 bottles. The Grumello subzone includes the Sassorosso vineyard, delivering fine and elegant fruit with small berries, blue flowers and iron ore or salty mineral. The mouthfeel is thin and very compact, but the flavor profile is persistent and would make a more-than-worthy accompaniment to Valtellina's king pasta dishes, its buckwheat pizzoccheri with butter, potatoes, cabbage and cheese.
