The Negretti 2018 Barolo Rive (with 7,000 bottles produced) offers smooth concentration and the slightly softer vinous disposition that one might associate with wines from La Morra. This is a balanced and fresh Nebbiolo with a more accessible personality that suits it very nicely, especially if paired with one of the rich meat sauces and pasta dishes that are typical of Piedmont's regional cuisine. Grapes are harvested from a south-facing position, and the vines are 45 years old. Some of that freshness and brightness is locked in during a brief phase of cryomaceration (for 36 hours), and aging occurs in Austrian oak casks. This is a terrific find.

The Negretti 2017 Barolo Rive draws its organically-farmed fruit from La Morra. Of these various releases from this estate, this wine reveals a bigger sense of power, concentration and overall structure. It's not by that much, but there is a difference. This wine carries the most meat on its bones. The bouquet opens to dark fruit and cherry flavors, and to the palate, the wine shows robust depth. There is a touch of ripeness with a dried cherry skin aroma that is a little out of place. Production is 7,000 bottles.
