The Masi Serego Alighieri 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Vaio Armaron is packed tight with black fruit, and you feel the impact of the wine's concentration and intensity on all the senses. The bouquet shows baked berry, exotic spice, barbecue smoke and teriyaki. There are hints of balsam herb or a flavor that resembles A1 steak sauce. The wine's texture is suitably rich to support all that intensity. This is a 42,000-bottle release.

From a historic estate that was a residence of the family of Italy's language and literary genius Dante Alighieri, the Masi Serego Alighieri 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Vaio Armaron is a generous and hearty wine. The bouquet is quite opulent, although there is a note of worn leather or cured meat that you notice straight off. This points to the more evolved state of this cooler vintage with fruit picked eight years ago. Those warm savory tones segue to baked fruit and dried blackberry. The wine finishes long with hints of sweetness and smoky spice. The overall effect is one of intensity and boldness. The wine is great now, but I'm concerned that those leathery and animal notes could worsen with time. I have shortened the drinking window as a result. Production is 42,000 bottles.

This wine is part of the Serego Alighieri property, hailing back to 1353, one that prizes a slightly more linear and compact wine in terms of the mouthfeel. The 2012 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Serego Alighieri Vaio Armaron brings out some black olive, but mostly we're talking about super dark fruit here in a seamless delivery. I had the bottle open for a while, and it just got better as it breathed. It's a blend of 70% Corvina, 20% Rondinella and 10% Molinara, with huge intensity and 15.5% alcohol, a nice red for a steak and an acorn squash purée. The aromas recall your classic Amarone, with dried fruit, raisin, prune and exotic spice. Some 42,000 bottles were produced.

The inky black 2011 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Serego Alighieri Vaio Armaron is a dark, deeply layered and sophisticated red wine. Do not underestimate the intensity of this wine. The aromas peel off slowly at first but quickly gain momentum. Dried blackberry, Spanish cedar, mahogany, campfire ash and barbecue smoke are delivered with carefully measured intensity. The mouthfeel is decisively firm and thick with a point of tannic astringency on the close. The finish is syrupy and savory at the same time.

The wine also shows beautiful intensity in the mouth where its thick consistency leaves lasting flavors of dark fruit and smoke: Drink now or hold up to ten years.
