The Masi 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Costasera (with 50,000 bottles made) pours forth with dark concentration and robust fruit weight. You get a strong delivery of dried plum, blackcurrant, baking spice, leather, redwood and sticky chewing tobacco. You need to be mentally prepared to take on all this vinous volume and power, and a cut of charcoal grilled tri-tip to accompany this bottle sure would help.

The Masi 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Costasera offers aromas of dried fruit and dusty terracotta that are unique to this warm and sunny vintage. This Riserva shows an extra dose of sweetness (with a 15.5% alcohol content) and thick concentration that gives this wine a lot of power and density that is especially evident on the palate. This blend of 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella and 5% Molinara is almost chewy and syrupy in texture, but it does not come across as too heavy or thick. This Riserva is submitted to up to 40 months in oak, both Slavonian and Allier. Production is 60,000 bottles.

Packaged in its elegant black label, the Masi 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Costasera shows some of the cured leather and old spice aromas that we saw in the Masi Serego Alighieri Amarone Vaio Armaron from the same vintage. There's maybe just a sliver of Band-Aid, but it's reasonably contained at this stage. I suggest a near or medium-term drinking window as a result. Besides those savory tones, this 60,000-bottle production shows heavy dark fruit and baked blackberry.

Syrupy, dark and very rich, the 2012 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Costasera is a full-bodied red wine and a very nice one indeed. Tar and tobacco appear in the mouth, with a very thick and velvety texture balanced with a 15.5% alcohol content. This is a hot-vintage blend of 70% Corvina, 15% Rondinella, 10% Oseleta and 5% Molinara that sees a long appassimento period of up to 120 days. With up to 40 months of oak aging in 600-liter Slavonian casks, this wine shows dark concentration, black fruit flavors and thick intensity. The mouthfeel is seamless; however, the wine definitely flexes its muscles, something you'd serve with a Hungarian goulash and freshly baked bread, for example. Some 46,000 bottles were made.

This is a beautiful wine by the technical winemaking team at Masi. The 2011 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Costasera opens to a midnight black appearance and thick concentration. On first nose, you really get a sense of the power and depth of this wine. The bouquet is redolent of dried blackberry and plum with spice, barbecue smoke and cured meat. The wine is textured and powerful in terms of mouthfeel with a thick coating of dark flavors that wrap thickly over the palate. Masi's Riserva Amarone shows great results in warm vintages like this.
