The 2005 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Costasera contains a greater percentage of Oseleta than the straight Amarone Costasera and is made from fruit that sees an extended period of drying. The 2005 Riserva Costasera is an intense, powerful wine packed with deep, concentrated fruit. I am not sure 2005 was the year to make a Riserva. The bouquet here is not perfectly articulated, while the tannins dry out a touch in the finish. Still, this shows plenty of depth and muscle in reserve, not to mention considerable personality. It will be interesting to see what future vintages bring. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.
This is one of the finest and most consistent set of wines I have tasted from Masi, one of the historic names in Veneto.
