Syrupy plums and cherries with a refreshing linear acidity. Grainy tannins. Persistent, mid-weight, not overblown.

The exotic, dense ruby/purple-colored 2000 Bombereto (a single vineyard, 100% Sangiovese) was aged in French oak, one-third of which was new. Barrel sizes ranged from small barriques to large foudres. It offers up copious aromas of smoky espresso intermixed with sweet black cherry and berry fruit, medium body, outstanding density, and a long, licorice and leather-imbued finish. The dense ruby/purple-colored 1999 Bombereto is a seriously-endowed offering with abundant quantities of strawberry and black cherry fruit. Half of this cuvee is aged in French barrels, of which one-third are new, and the rest in larger foudres. This gives the wine good structure, but no noticeable pain grille, toasty notes. The 1998 Bombereto may not be spectacular, but this single-vineyard, 100% Sangiovese aged in French barriques exhibits complex, earthy, strawberry, red currant, and leather characteristics. Elegant for a 1998, with good depth, spicy wood, and a moderately-endowed, slightly tannic finish, it should evolve for 10-12 years.
