The 2009 The Doctor Proprietary Red is composed of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. An opaque purple color is followed by notions of bay leaf, blueberry, black raspberry, black currant and licorice characteristics. This lush, full-bodied, beautifully concentrated 2009 reveals silky tannins as well as a long finish. The ripeness of the tannins is superior to the two previous vintages. Much of the fruit is sold to other wineries, but after hiring consulting winemaker Aaron Pott, they began to estate bottle in 2008. The wines are attractively packaged in heavy bottles and appear to be taking on more finesse, especially the 2009s. An ambitious blend of Merlot, Tempranillo, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, grown mainly on Atlas Peak. It’s bone dry and locked down in tannins and acidity, offering little relief, but there’s a potent core of blackberries and black currants that yearns to bust through.
