Another incredible Syrah, the 2012 Syrah White Hawk Vineyard was co-fermented with 2% Viognier and saw a slightly longer elevage, with 22 months in 65% new French oak. Its vibrant purple color is followed by pedal-to-the-metal notes of cassis, liquid smoke, chocolate and crushed flowers. Full-bodied, beautifully concentrated and hedonistic, it stays seamless and elegant, with superb overall balance, striking purity and a great finish. It will have decade or more of overall longevity. Unfortunately, there's only a tiny 500 cases to go around.

The 2011 Syrah White Hawk Vineyard is beautiful. Incorporating 5% Viognier and aged 16 months in 100% new French oak, it offers classic Syrah notes of chocolaty dark fruits, smoke, crushed rock and ample background meatiness to go with a medium to full-bodied, focused, pure and layered style. It’s a classy, balanced Syrah that will dish out loads of pleasure over the coming 5-7 years. I loved these latest releases from winemaker Russell From. His 2011s are excellent in the vintage, with slightly toned down, elegant profiles that stay focused and tight on the palate. The 2010 Syrah White Hawk Vineyard is a blend of 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier that comes all from the top-notch White Hawk Vineyard. Locked and loaded with massive black fruits, chalky minerality, chocolate, pepper and bramble qualities on the nose, it is full-bodied, rich and long, with chewy tannin providing solid framework for the finish. As with most of Russell’s 2010s, it will be even better in another year or two and shine for just under a decade. Drink 2014-2020. Russell From continues to release a bevy of smoking wines under his Herman Story label. His wines never lack for fruit or texture, yet to me, always stay beautifully balanced and downright thrilling to drink. The 2009 Syrah Whitehawk Vineyard is one of the more overt, opulent wines in this lineup. Plush black cherries, blueberries, licorice and spices are some of the notes that emerge from this big wine. Personally, this is a style I find less appealing than some of the estate’s other wines. The Whitehawk Vineyard has 2% Viognier in the blend and spent 18 months in French oak, 50% new.
