The light- to medium-bodied, thin, weedy 1993 Cote Rotie should be avoided. Last tasted 11/95.

The 1988, given the fine raw materials offered by that vintage, should have been better. Tasted twice, it displayed an intensely herbaceous, nearly vegetal bouquet, with peppery, somewhat disjointed, yet ripe flavors. There is moderate tannin and good acidity, but the wine's greenness suggests either young vines or too early a harvest date. Last tasted 6/93.

After Guy Bernard's highly successful 1986, I was not surprised to see how well he performed in the underrated vintage (for Cote Rotie) of 1987. It is a soft, deliciously fruity, herb- and cassis-flavored wine, with some spicy, woody elements in the background. The tannins are light and velvety, the acidity is sound, and the concentration is very good. This is a delightful, elegant Cote Rotie for drinking over the next 4-5 years. Last tasted 6/93.
