The Feiler 2007 Beerenauslese Cuvee of Welschriesling, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay incorporated around 40% still fresh berries, which required early and rapid harvest and a wine whose juicy freshness in turn lent it to being captured by early bottling. The hazelnut cream, apple jelly, white raisin, and glazed pineapple character of this lush wine is perfectly leavened by its persistent sense of lively acidity and results in refreshment of a sort generally absent from Burgenland Beerenauslese. The pressing of whole clusters - employed here for nobly sweet wines since the 2005 vintage - also seems to be paying dividends in clarity and vivacity. The Feiler 2006 Beerenauslese Cuvee of Welschriesling and Chardonnay smelled of honey, apple jelly, pineapple, and caramel. Creamy, polished and rich; pure and concentrated albeit with very obvious sweetness; it offers alluring spiciness, persistently refreshing primary juiciness, and a subtly bitter fruit pit note that helps alleviate the sweetness in the finish. I have had a chance to taste only a very few samples from Feiler-Artinger over the past eighteen months, and shall try to catch up with them in the near future. The 2004 Beerenauslese Cuvee of Welschriesling and Chardonnay smelled of honey, candied apple and glazed pineapple. In the mouth, the same candied, glazed, and honey-drenched fruit characteristics continued but a juicy, sappy streak runs invigoratingly through this, leading to a lovely, luscious finish, demonstrating precisely why this synergistic combination of grapes is so often the basis of nobly sweet wines from the Neusiedlersee area.
