The palest and most delicate of the 2018 single-vineyard bottlings from Atauta, the 2018 La Roza is a scarce wine produced as a result of the project to recover some of the best terroirs with the oldest vines in the valley. It comes from three small plots of 180- to 190 year-old-vines in the middle of a small holm oak forest—0.24 hectares selected for its quality—with 779 ancient plants that were hand-harvested. The fruit fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. The wine has a moderate 14.2% alcohol, very good freshness and acidity and a medium-bodied palate, and the tannins are ultra refined, leaving a chalky sensation on the palate. Unfortunately, 2018 only delivered 574 numbered bottles of this elixir that was bottled in July 2020. This has to be one of my all-time favorite wines from Atauta. Bravo!

A harmonious red, with taut, well-meshed tannins lending definition to the creamy mix of baked black cherry, cocoa powder, red licorice, hot stone and balsamico acidity elements. The 2017 La Roza feels very young but has amazing harmony and energy. It's a wine from a very unusual vintage; the frost that happened in other zones of Ribera del Duero didn't affect the vines here, as the cycle of the vines in this cooler zone is slower and the vines had not sprouted. This is from a north-facing vineyard that is even cooler, and in 2017, it behaved very well and produced a very elegant wine with subtle aromas and an incredible texture. It has abundant tannins that are very fine and chalky, and the finish is long and dry. This is a great wine in the making. It should develop nicely in bottle. 581 numbered bottles were filled in August 2019.

A dense and bold red, with savory cigar box and espresso notes accenting ripe black cherry and black currant fruit, red licorice and mocha flavors. Tightly meshed, firmed by sculpted tannins and brightened by orange peel acidity, with a long, well-spiced finish. A powerhouse, but finds harmony by playing all the components at equal volume. The 2016 La Roza follows the style of the 2014—aromatic and perfumed, with the elegance of the sandy soils. It comes from three plots of vines that they reckon are around 170 years of age (!) and which total only 0.24 hectares. It's elegant and subtle, with the elegant tannins from the sandy soils (there's also clay and limestone here, of course), one of the most elegant wines here, and at the same time, it's very complete. 759 bottles were filled in September 2018.
