The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Champimonts was whittled down to three casks, half as much as normal. It has a fragrant, quite perfumed bouquet with raspberry preserve, black cherries and a slight cold steel scent underneath that lends tension. The palate is well balanced with succulent ripe fruit, quite lively and pretty on the finish with a pleasant saline tang.

The 2015 Beaune 1er Cru Champimonts displayed a little reduction at first but underneath lies brisk red cherry, wild strawberry and undergrowth scents that appear well defined. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp acidity, replete with energy and fission, though I feel it ought to evolve more substance on the finish. All the same, I feel this Beaune premier cru has good potential and certainly it represents a step up from the 2014.

The 2014 Beaune 1er Cru Champimonts was cropped at just seven hectoliters per hectare because of the hail. Perhaps as a consequence, there is something a little "static" about the nose at the moment; it does not "flow" like others. The palate is actually much better with good body and quite fine tannin. I like the salinity on the iodine-tinged finish. Hopefully, the aromatics will open by the time it is in bottle.
