The two red wines from this estate include the medium dark-colored, cherry, kirsch, roasted peanut, spicy-scented 1993 Grenache VDP d'Oc, a supple, savory wine to drink over the next several years. Colombette's 1992 Grenache Vin de Pays-Coteaux du Libron would be an ideal restaurant wine, especially for patrons looking for an opulent, delicious, soft red that is neither heavy nor tannic. It reveals an attractive deep ruby color, a forthright, generous nose of sweet, jammy black-cherries, lush, heady, succulent flavors, low acidity, and a plump, mouthfilling finish. As so many tasting notes in this issue indicate, 1991 was an exceptional vintage in France's southern Languedoc-Roussillon region. Unlike most of northern France, this region had no problems with the rain that plagued many of France's vignerons. This domaine also exhibits a sure touch with red wines. Both the Grenache and Syrah have been aged in small oak barrels, which perhaps works better with the Syrah than the Grenache. Nevertheless, the 1990 Grenache displays medium ruby color, a nice spicy, jammy, cherry-scented nose, medium to full body, and a heady, alcoholic finish. Drink it over the next 1-2 years.
