Produced from three prime old vine parcels within Fournier's holdings in Marsannay's future premiers crus, the 2020 Marsannay Trois Terres Vieilles Vignes unwinds in the glass with notions of sweet cherries, violets, orange rind, spices and petals. Medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's supple and concentrated, with lively acids and a long, saline finish. This is a terrific bottling.

The 2015 Marsannay Trois Terres Vieilles Vignes has a crisp and precise bouquet: dark cherries intermingling with bilberry and just a slight reductive scent although that seems to blows away. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins, plenty of ripe black cherry and strawberry fruit that segues into a lightly spiced, harmonious, licorice-tinged finish. Enjoy this is lovely Marsannay over the next five to eight years. Readers should note that this will be the last vintage for this cuvée for a short period after the damage in 2016, and subsequent reorganization of holdings.

The 2014 Marsannay Trois Terres Vieilles Vignes comes from La Charmes aux Prêtres, Les Grasses Têtes and Les Grandes Vignes, the vines planted in 1933, 1937 and 1943. This vintage includes around 75% whole bunches (not that this is particularly discernible). Laurent Fournier described this as the "dark side of Marsannay." It has a very pure, slightly sultry bouquet with red cherries, raspberry preserve and blackcurrant scents; it is delineated and focused, gaining in intensity as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannin, a crisp line of acidity and a gentle grip here with the mouth tingling with limestone on the structured, masculine finish. It will require 4-5 years in bottle and it will repay you with several years of drinking pleasure.

The 2013 Marsannay Trois Terres Vieilles Vignes comes from three lieux-dits: La Charme aux Prêtres, Les Grasses-Têtes and Les Grandes Vignes. This has a more sensual bouquet in the making than the Croix Violettes – floral with crushed violets and blueberry jam. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, linear in structure with a broody, quite intense finish that is strict but compelling. Excellent.

The 2012 Marsannay Trois Terres Vieilles Vignes has a lifted, slightly candied bouquet that unfolds nicely in the glass and develops a rose petal/violet scent. The palate is medium-bodied with a tart, pretty entry and from a relatively understated, demure opening, it gradually builds into an exquisite, mineral-intense Marsannay on the finish. Excellent! Drink 2015-2023. I was tipped off about the quality of Laurent Fournier’s work at Domaine Jean Fournier a few months ago, and made a beeline for their stand at the Grand Jours de Bourgogne. Laurent is one of the appellation’s exciting young winemakers destined to put Marsannay on the map. A bit like Sylvain Pataille, his wines brim with pure, ravishing Pinot Noir fruit. They are not shy wines, but come at you with their generous fruite and silky textures.
