This is the finest wine I have tasted from Domaine de la Mavette. It needs 3-4 years of cellaring, but it reveals a deep ruby/purple color, a big-boned, structured, tannic feel in the mouth, plenty of depth and ripeness, oodles of jammy black-cherry and curranty fruit, and ferocious tannin in the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2008. Last tasted 6/96. This estate has impressive hillside vineyard sites in addition to very old vines, so the potential for brilliant wines is obvious. To date, the wine has been an old-style, slightly oxidized Gigondas that is heavy and forceful. The 1995s may be a sign that more freshness and an earlier bottling are making some inroads at this property.(No tasting note was provided in Issue 113. We have instead included the text of the tasting note from the 1997 Rhone Book)
