Only released in the best vintages, the Damilano 2016 Barolo Riserva Cannubi 1752 (with 6,000 bottles made) starts off a bit slow like some of the other wines in this portfolio and requires a little extra time to open. That shy beginning slowly embraces dark fruit, blackcurrant, peat moss and crushed stone. This Riserva offers an extra layer of density and power (with a 15% alcohol content). It would benefit from clarity on the bouquet, and surely this will come with time.

The 2013 Barolo Riserva Cannubi 1752 opens a wider window onto one of the most applauded and balanced vintages in recent years. The 2013 growing season was long and had cool nights going into harvest. These conditions helped to develop the aromatic intensity and precision of the bouquet and the linear tendencies of the mouthfeel. Made with a special selection of fruit from the Cannubi vineyard, this Riserva shows dark cherry, cassis, iron ore, licorice and camphor ash. The wine has aged enough to give you an idea of where it's going, and the best bet is to let it continue its journey. I suggest a medium to long drinking window for this top-shelf bottle from Damilano.

The 2011 Barolo Riserva Cannubi 1752 opens to a dark color and saturation, which belies a wine of thinner mouthfeel but huge intensity on the nose. The bouquet here is evolved, with licorice, tar and tilled earth. It is dark, well saturated and deep in terms of aromas, but again, it feels a little short in the mouth, where it loses its intensity. This is a nice expression that has not fully fleshed out yet, despite 60 months of slow and careful aging in large oak casks. Give it more time. Some 6,000 bottles were released.

Damilano is on a roll with this special Riserva. The 2010 Barolo Riserva Cannubi 1752 is infused with savory tones of leather, spice and smoke. Those specific aromas add to the immense sense of sophistication and elegance that is exuded from the bouquet of this deeply layered Barolo. Opening to a dark garnet color with little light saturation, this beautiful Nebbiolo is expressive and articulate; it is an especially worthy spokesperson for this classic vintage. At its core, the wine delivers dark, luscious dark fruit that still has primary freshness at this young stage. Otherwise, this Riserva is also far enough along to show tertiary tones of balsam herb and licorice.

I am just so pleased by the tendency, practiced now by an ever-growing number of estates, to keep back vintages for later release. This wine from the faraway 2009 vintage is an example of that trend. The 2009 Barolo Riserva Cannubi 1752 offers a very interesting juxtaposition. On the one hand, you feel the warmth of the vintage. The winemaking style at the time seems to prize more succulence and voluptuousness. On the other hand, this wine is already showing the elegant and subtle signs of its evolution. This wine ages in large oak casks for 60 months and in bottle for another two years. Some 6,000 bottles were produced.
