The 2011 Elios is a blend of Garnacha and Carinena aged for 10 months in oak barrels of different sizes. It’s a fruit-driven Mediterranean blend with aromas of garrigue and ripe red and black fruit, with the oak well-integrated into the wine. The palate has gentle tannins and deep flavors, with moderate acidity. Drink now-2016. Costers del Priorat is a young enterprise, created in 2005 by five friends from Bellmunt del Priorat. They own vineyards in Torroja and Bellmunt. They produce around 50,000 bottles of wine from their 17 hectares of vineyards. The wines are true to their birthplace. The 2009 Elios is a blend of 55% Garnacha, 35% Carinena and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. It demonstrates the best clarity and composure on the nose, with lifted blackberry and cedar aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, rounded tannins. There are attractive subtle, earthy notes towards the finish and even if it lacks a bit of backbone, it is well-made wine. Drink now-2017. I must confess, I was disappointed with the wines from Costers del Priorat, even more so when I later discovered the prices for wines such as Clos Cypres. They seemed to fall into the cliche of ostentatious, overripe Priorat wine that assumes that more is always better. Perhaps it is no surprise that if I had to choose any of the three tasted, I would opt for the perfectly sound “Elios,” the cheapest wine, because it comes across as less manipulated. Importer: F.L. Costers del Priorat’s 2008 Elios is a blend of 50% Garnacha, 25% Carinena, with the balance Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. It proffers primary black fruits, spice box, and floral notes in an easy-to-understand style. It packs plenty of power but not much subtlety. Drink this excellent value over the next 5-6 years. Fleshy impression of red and black fruit and flowers on the nose. Fine-grained palate which is well balanced and has an attractive mineral finish. Alc: 14.5%.
