The red 2015 Somni is too ripe for my taste and plays with over-ripeness. It's a blend of Cari?ena and Syrah, with ripe flavors and grainy tannins. 5,840 bottles were filled in October 2016.

The nose of the 2014 Somni differs from the rest of the wines here. It's the only one where the oak and the sweet spices are obvious -- cinnamon, vanilla and smoke with some tree bark and ripe cherries. This blend of Cari?ena and Syrah feels a lot more mainstream, generously oaked and quite different from the rest. The palate shows abundant, dusty tannins that might require some more time in bottle. There are 6,865 bottles produced.

The 2013 Somni is ripe but has a herbal side to it. This blend of Cari?ana and Syrah is juicy and ripe with flavors of ripe plums and a dry texture. 4,395 bottles.

The 2012 Somni, a blend of Cari?ena and Syrah from the estate vineyards, matured in new French oak barriques for one year. Even though the oak is still present, there is nice complexity and typicity revealing earthy notes of graphite and peat that lend some rusticity and character. The fruit is ripe and black rather than red, and the palate is powerful and concentrated with some vanilla flavors. It seems to still need some time in bottle. 4,395 bottles produced.

The 2011 Clos del Portal Somni produced exclusively with Carinena and Syrah is still in need of time to absorb the effect of the 14 months the wine spent in French oak barrels that for now take over the show, displaying a balsamic nose of spices, eucalyptus, toasted bread, peat, dark chocolate and leather with hints of Chinese ink, black licorice and wet paint. The palate is much more expressive of the quality of the fruit than the nose and reveals fine-grained tannins, piercing acidity and pure flavors with some balsamic aromas making a comeback in the aftertaste. Drink 2015-2020. Lawyer Alfredo Arribas has been the name behind Portal del Priorat since 2001. The wines are sourced from the property Clos del Portal, located between the villages of Lloar and Bellmunt. He also produces another Priorat under the Ediciones i-Limitadas label. You will find his wines also in Montsant (Portal del Montsant before, but under his own name now and Ediciones i-Limitadas). More will come in the future, as he has a new biodynamic project in a high-altitude vineyard. Anything with the name of Alfredo Arribas deserves attention, as the great collection of wines from Priorat show.
