The purple-colored 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve proffers scents of cedar, spice box, leather, violets, and assorted black fruits. Savory, ripe, and well-balanced on the palate, it has ample fruit and enough structure to provide enjoyment through 2018 if not longer. The 2008 Merlot Reserve could not be recommended.Canoe Ridge was a once thriving brand under the stewardship of the now defunct Chalone Group. After the sale, it seems to have been neglected, and when I visited in 2006 it more closely resembled a mausoleum than a working winery. Very young, this is still showing some green flavors, but it’s layered and complex. Black cherry, cassis, black olives, black tea, cured meat and smoke all wrap together in this elegant and precise reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Give it a couple of hours to breathe.——P.G.(5/1/2010)—— 92
