Made with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, the Campo alla Sughera 2019 Bolgheri Superiore Arnione is a terrific Tuscan red that balances elegance and power. It shows a rather contained personality that is ultimately its best asset. Spicy oak and dark spice transition to plummy fruit, grilled herb and sweet potting soil. No one element is overdone, and all those flavors converge carefully on the palate. This production of 21,000 bottles is expected to hit the market in October 2023.

The 2018 Bolgheri Superiore Arnione (a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot) feels thinner and more streamlined compared to the 2019 vintage that I tasted at the same time. Dark fruit and plum are followed by a dusting of spicy oak and toast. The wine is contained and balanced, although it pulls back slightly in terms of intensity. Soils in this vineyard site are alluvial in nature with sand and clay. Arnione ages in oak for 18 months followed by 24 months in bottle before this production of 18,800 bottles hits the market.

A thickly textured red, packed with solid tannins, this delivers mulberry, plum, iron, cedar and tar flavors. Monolithic today, with tannins leaving a strong grip on the long finish. The 2017 Bolgheri Superiore (a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot) opens to dense richness and concentrated flavors of blackberry, pressed cherry, sweet spice and campfire ash. It could be the cumulative effect of all these 2017s tasted together, but the tannins feel too tight on this wine, as they do on many of the others in this peer group. I taste the astringency of the ripe fruit and of the oak. This wine aged in oak (both tonneaux and barrique) for 16 months, and 18,000 bottles were made.

A broad, ripe style, exhibiting plum, blackberry, tar, wild herb and tobacco flavors. Exuberant, with everything in the right proportions, ending with a long aftertaste of fruit, earth and spice.
