The grapiest and youngest of this trio, the 2012 Tinto is composed of 85% Tempranillo and the rest Garnacha and Mazuelo, aged totally in concrete and stainless steel. It possesses a deep ruby/purple color along with medium body, copious amounts of creme de cassis, licorice and lead pencil shavings and a moderately endowed, supple, intense, richly fruity personality. Drink it over the next 2-3 years. From a cooperative of six families founded in 1987, Burgo Viejo’s delicious 2011 Tinto (a blend of 85% Tempranillo and the rest 10% Grenache and 5% Mazuelo, aged largely in concrete vats) is a mid-weight Spanish fruit bomb. Loads of black cherry and black currant fruit intermixed with some licorice, tobacco leaf and spice box jump from the glass of this deep ruby/purple-tinged wine. It is medium-bodied, lush and ideal for drinking over the next several years. Don’t expect complexity, but rather a hedonistic style of Rioja that sells for a song. The 2010 Burgo Viejo Tinto is a blend of 85% Tempranillo with the balance Garnacha and Mazuelo fermented and raised in stainless steel. Cinnamon, violets, licorice, and blackberry compose the nose of this spicy, forward, friendly Rioja. Its firm acid structure will allow it to provide pleasure for several more years.
