From a cooperative of six families founded in 1987, Burgo Viejo’s delicious 2011 Tinto (a blend of 85% Tempranillo and the rest 10% Grenache and 5% Mazuelo, aged largely in concrete vats) is a mid-weight Spanish fruit bomb. Loads of black cherry and black currant fruit intermixed with some licorice, tobacco leaf and spice box jump from the glass of this deep ruby/purple-tinged wine. It is medium-bodied, lush and ideal for drinking over the next several years. Don’t expect complexity, but rather a hedonistic style of Rioja that sells for a song.
