The very balsamic 2016 Palacio del Burgo Reserva has notes of incense and cigar ash, autumn forest floor and spicy fruit, quite classical Rioja. The palate is medium-bodied and shows mostly resolved tannins and a soft texture, finishing dry and clean with some notes of licorice. Very pleasant. 36,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2018.

The 2014 Palacio del Burgo Reserva is pure Tempranillo, where they look for higher ripeness of the grapes and more influence of the oak, aging it in second and third use French and American oak barrels for 18 months. It's similar to the regular Reserva, with a little bit more influence from the élevage, with ripe fruit and plenty of spices. Very drinkable in a commercial style. 36,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2016.

Plum, blood orange, black olive, toast and mineral notes mingle in this tight, bright red. Juicy acidity keeps this lively, while firm tannins impart focus. Graceful, with good intensity. The 2010 Palacio del Burgo Reserva, a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha and 5% Carignan, shows plenty of licorice, new saddle leather, pepper and blackcurrant fruit. It is medium-bodied and luscious, with a subtle dosage of toasty oak. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.

These are custom cuvées made specifically for importer Fran Kysela. Palacio del Burgo is a large estate, even for Rioja, with over 494 acres of vines. All three of these inexpensive offerings are impressive and merit serious interest from thrifty consumers. The most complex as well as the most expensive of this trio is the 2009 Reserva. Made from 85% Tempranillo, 10% Grenache and 5% Carignan, it exhibits a dark plum/ruby color and a sweet bouquet of loamy soil, tobacco leaf, red and blackcurrants and cherries intermixed with a hint of licorice. This medium-bodied, lush, complex 2009 smells good, tastes good, and finishes impressively. Enjoy it over the next 4-5 years.
