The 2013 Valdefama is pure Tinta de Toro aged for six months in French barriques; it is fresh, fruit-driven, clean, and approachable with polished tannins and good acidity. This wine is is pleasant and easy to drink. It is a nice, soft approach to Toro, and impressive for such a challenging vintage. 40,000 bottles.

Pagos Matarredonda’s 2009 Valdefama is 100% Tinta de Toro aged for 6 months in French oak. Dense purple in color, it displays a nose of tar, mineral, espresso, and blackberry. Ripe, balanced, and savory on the palate, this powerful effort is a very good value for drinking over the next 4-5 years. Those seeking delicacy should look elsewhere.
