Ruby-colored and revealing a nose reminiscent of Peking duck (complete with plum sauce), the Maranges La Fussiere is an extremely well-made, vibrant, supple, and medium-bodied wine with cassis, blackberries and stone-like flavors. All too often, wines from the Maranges villages appear backward when young and lose their fruit before softening out. This offering from Morey, is delicious and ready to drink. Bernard Morey and his sons crafted seven lovely 1996 red Burgundies, many from old vines. Moreover, all of them are reasonably priced. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel (205) 980-8802.

The ruby-colored Maranges Les Fussieres exhibits blackberry aromas and a concentrated, medium-bodied, thick and tangy flavor profile packed with cassis, cherries and minerals. It will be at its best between now and 2000. Note: The price for this wine was not available because the domaine's US importer does not purchase it. The wine may, however, be available through other sources, particularly the gray market. The bottling line was churning away when I visited this estate in January and many of the wines I tasted had been bottled but were not yet corked.
