Maryland's best winemaker (and I must confess, a dear friend) has again fashioned a deep ruby/purple-colored, classy, rich, medium-bodied wine that offers a Bordeaux-like gracefulness and restraint. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, Basignani's 1993 Lorenzino exhibits a moderate lead pencil, cassis, and subtlely smoky-scented nose, youthful, rich, ripe, expansive flavors, adequate acidity, a sweet, extracted ripeness, and moderate tannin. The wine is still young and relatively unevolved, but very promising. Is this Maryland's answer to a top Bordeaux St.-Julien? Anticipated maturity: 1999-2010.Tel. (410) 472-4718
