The 2008 Orvieto Classico Superiore Calcaia Dolce caresses the palate with orange marmalade, apricot jam, dried flowers, and savory herbs. The 2008 is strikingly beautiful from start to finish. This mid-weight, moderately sweet dessert wine can be enjoyed with fruit based desserts, soft cheeses and on its own. In 2008 it is drop-dead gorgeous. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. The 2007 Orvieto Classico Superiore Calcaia Dolce is an attractive, moderately sweet dessert wine in this vintage. High-toned, floral aromatics lead to white peaches and pears. The estate’s 2006 Orvieto Classico Superiore Calcaia Dolce is made from botrytised grapes. It shows gorgeous balance, minerality and freshness in a mid-weight style, with superb length and fine overall balance. A floral bouquet melds into ripe, juicy peaches, mint and sweet spices. The aromas and flavors remain fresh throughout, with none of the candied, burnt-sugar notes found in the 2007 Moscato Passito. This is a terrific wine from Barberani. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2016.
