Mostly Grechetto blended with Trebbiano and Procanico, the organic 2019 Orvieto Classico Superiore Luigi & Giovanna is a delight to drink. Umbria makes some terrific white wines, and this is one of them. You just want to bring a bottle to a terrace with a summer sunset. The wine's medium-bodied texture is rendered fresh and vibrant thanks to sweet peach, honey, apple and green melon. It feels fleshy and soft on the close, and bright acidity kicks in at the end. It ages in large oak casks for one year.

This wine shows a more contemplative and sophisticated approach to local Orvieto winemaking tradition. A blend of 90% Grechetto with smaller parts Trebbiano and Procanico, the 2015 Orvieto Classico Superiore Luigi & Giovanna offers loads of honey, orchard fruit and exotic saffron powder. Some 5% of the fruit is late-harvest with Botrytis cinerea, and this tiny addition makes all the difference, adding so much more depth and complexity to this beautiful white wine that ages in large oak casks for 12 months. Pair it with delicate chicken tenders marinated in lemon juice. Some 10,000 bottles were made.

The 2014 Orvieto Classico Superiore Luigi & Giovanna is a wine of notable intensity and textural impact. The bouquet delivers creamy aromas of peach cobbler and poached pear. There is a very delicate touch of ash or flint at the back that adds taut firmness. In the mouth, the wine delivers pretty, albeit mild, flavor intensity with a touch of sweet apricot and honey. This wine represents a blend of 90% Grechetto with 10% Trebbiano Procanico. A small amount (5%) of the fruit has been affected by Botrytis Cinerea, or Muffa Nobile in Italian, before going into the blend.

Here is a very attractive white wine from Central Italy. The 2012 Orvieto Classico Superiore Luigi & Giovanna is both intense and harmonious with integrated aromas that flow freely from the bouquet. The wine is composed of 80% Grechetto and 20% Trebbiano Procanico. The Grechetto element is slightly botrytized. It shows peach, pear, golden delicious apples and toasted almond. It is both rich and creamy yet never feels heavy. A wine like this should age forward for the next few years.

One of the most unusual wines in Umbria, Barberani’s 2009 Orvieto Classico Superiore Luigi & Giovanna is a pure Grechetto made from late-harvested, slightly botrytised fruit. It boasts gorgeous inner perfume and a soft, textured finish laced with apricots, peaches, flowers and sage. This is a fabulous showing from Barberani. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2014.
