Viognier can be a tricky grape in hot and dry climates like you get in Sicily. The grape tends to lose the freshness of its aromas and delivers viscous stickiness instead. Those characteristics are evident in the 2015 Sicilia Viognier Ginolfo, made with grapes from an inland area of the island. The bouquet offers ripe aromas of candied orange peel, honey and canned peach. This is a mid-weight white with pretty notes of flint and smoke on the close.

Viognier and Sicily work well together to produce fragrant wines with aromas of honey, violets and exotic fruit. There’s also a touch of alcoholic heat on the close. ——M.L.(4/1/2012)—— 87

Baglio di Pianetto, with its beautiful dairy farms and vineyards in central Sicily, offers one of Italy’s best wood-aged expressions of Viognier. The wine boasts sophistication and intensity with well-focused aromas of pineapple, Golden Delicious apple, pear and apricot with vanilla and butter spread within the folds.
