The 2022 Mantra Chardonnay is composed of a combination of Gingin clone (Wilyabrup) and Clones 1 and 5, from Wallcliffe. Each of the parcels were fermented separately utilizing indigenous yeasts and matured for seven months in French oak, with regular batonnage. In the mouth, the wine is creamy and leesy, with custard powder and yellow peaches galore. It offers Golden Delicious apples, salted nuts, sandalwood and green notes (herbs? oak?). It is resinous and sticky in texture, somehow. The oak feels prominent in the mouth, with raw/open connotations within that space. It is slightly disjointed but has loads of flavor. 13.6% alcohol, sealed diner screw cap. Bottled unfined and unfiltered; 187 dozen made.
