Here's a back vintage from an estate that tends to release its wines later than most. The Adanti 2014 Montefalco Sagrantino Arquata shows tertiary definition with cured meat, leather, spice and sun-dried fruit. Aging has brought forth a very savory character. But vintage plays just as important a role with medium concentration and an accessible delivery. The 2014 growing season was cool and humid overall.

The 2010 Montefalco Sagrantino Arquata lacks the extreme directness and focus you usually get with this super tannic grape from Umbria in central Italy. This wine instead offers a more relaxed and broad-shouldered bouquet with ripe blackberry, prune, smoke and exotic spice. The wine is aged in both tonneaux and large Slavonian oak casks for 30 months and it spends another year finding balance thanks to 24 months in the bottle.

Grapes for the 2007 Sagrantino di Montefalco were harvested after the first half of October. This wine shows surprising softness for the category: It must be a result of the many years of bottle aging this wine has endured. Soft spice and bitter chocolate make it reasonably approachable now.
