New oak was obvious in the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes. In addition to licorice, black cherry, and raspberry, it is a spicy, full-bodied, expansive, powerful and muscular wine with relatively high levels of tannin and new oak. The oak needs to become better integrated, but it should mesh with the fruit over the next 2-3 years. I would cellar this wine for at least 3-4 years and drink it over the following 15 years.
