Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru les Champs Gain from Vougeraie was showing a bit of vanilla-laced new oak on the nose, scents of frangipane and orange blossom emerging with time—pretty if not intellectual. The palate is balanced with a pleasant orange rind and tangerine entry, well-judged acidity if very straightforward and, like other 2014s from this vineyard, missing some mineralité on the finish. I would have expected just a bit more nerve here.
