This winery, named after its proprietor/winemaker Neil Pikes, is located sixty miles north of Adelaide in Clare Valley. The winery is well-known in Australia for its Riesling, but the reds are also successful, richly fruity wines. At first, the red wines taste like big, rich, ripe, fruit balls, without much complexity being displayed. However, 15-20 minutes in the glass reveals additional nuances and flavor dimensions. Because of its additional year of bottle age, the 1994 Shiraz is revealing more of a peppery, blackberry, and cassis character than the more grapy 1995. The wine reveals an opaque purple color, followed by intriguing aromas of licorice, gobs of sweet black fruits, silky tannin, medium to full body, and an opulent finish. It will drink well for 10-12 years. I was told by the importer that there will be a Reserve offering from the 1994 vintage. In plain-speak, this wine is just out and out ... yummy!
