Sergio Marchetti’s 1997 Brunello di Montalcino is a bold but balanced wine that appears largely intact. Compared to the 1999 that revealed more oak-related nuances, the 1997 is focused primarily on ethereal balsam toned of cola, anisette and menthol. They come together in stunning fashion. Crushed mineral adds dryness to the finish and the texture is fine and smooth. I wouldn’t aerate too long before drinking, but I would count on this wine lasting a few years longer. Drink: 2014-2027.

The medium garnet/ruby-colored 1997 exhibits a bouquet of sour cherries intermixed with hints of licorice, lavender, and bay leaves. It is a medium-bodied, lighter-styled Brunello with extremely dry, hard tannin in the finish. It will last 10-15 years, but will it ever provide pleasure?
